CHUNCHEON, South Korea [August 31, 2010]–Reigning World Cup champion Raimi Merritt defended her title on Monday to win her fourth World Cup in three years at the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup in ChunCheon, South Korea. The World Cup was held in conjunction with the World Leisure Games which included 13,000 competitors from 50 countries. The 17-year-old Merritt overcame the pressure of thousands of spectators looking on as she rode on Lake Uiam in ChunCheon. “What a way to end the 2010 season!” said Merritt.

Nicola Butler and Amber Wing, who had finished ahead of Merritt at the previous weekend’s WWA World Championships in Orlando, went off the dock on Lake Uiam just before Merritt. “They’re both phenomenal riders and after watching them, I knew I had to give it everything I had to take the win. Opening up with two 540s was gutsy, but I think it was my S-Bend, which was huge and clean, that probably clinched the gold,” said Merritt.

By winning this year’s World Cup, Merritt remains the number-one ranked pro women’s wakeboarder by the International Waterski Wakeboard Federation.

“I was glad to have my sister Chloe and dad with me in Korea. They really helped keep my head in the game. They also made runs to get me pizza all weekend so my stomach would stay calm–and finding pizza while competing in Asian countries is a tough job to do,” said Merritt.

Merritt will finish the 2010 season in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the WWA Wake Park National Cable Championships September 17-19.

Fans lined the shores of the Orlando Watersports Complex today to catch the final rounds of action at the 17th annual ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra. Pro riders from throughout the globe spent the day competing for world titles, with the results from the Pro Men and Pro Women’s divisions also deciding the winners of the King of Wake and Queen of Wake series.

The Pro Men’s division proved to be one of the most exciting finales in the WWA World Championship’s 17-year history. With top seed Harley Clifford failing to advance past the semifinals, Danny Harf, Trevor Hansen, Dean Smith and brothers Phillip and Bob Soven faced off in the five-man final.

All five pros threw down impressive runs, but Aussie Dean Smith made the biggest impact on the water to take home his first-ever world title. Phillip Soven and Trevor Hansen rounded out the Pro Men’s division podium, respectively.

“This is so sick, I’m the world champion for the next 365 days” said Smith. “Going into the finals, I didn’t know what would happen, but I just put it together out there and won.”

With today’s win, Dean Smith becomes the first Australian native to win the world title in the Pro Men’s division.

Phillip Soven’s second-place finish today placed the Longwood, Fla. at the top of the King of Wake standings, earning him his third crown in four years.

“I wanted to finish off the season with a win, but I’m not going home empty handed, I still won King of Wake,” said Soven.

In the Pro Women’s division, the top professional female riders in the world faced off in six-woman final for the world title and deciding points toward the Queen of Wake series. Despite light rain and wind, top seed Nicola Butler laid down the most impressive run of the day, which included a transfer back lip onto the funbox, to win her second world title in three years.

“I didn’t ride my best, I had a couple of falls, but I was stoked about my transfer,” said Butler. “It feels awesome to win.”

With today’s win, the England native finishes the 2010 season at the top of the Queen of Wake standings – Butler’s second crown in three years.

“I had a bad year in 2009, so to come back this year and win Queen of Wake is like redemption,” said Butler.

Reed Hansen took first place today in the Pro Wakeskate finals to win his fourth consecutive world title.

“Worlds is my favorite contest, so to win it four times in a row is pretty amazing,” said Hansen. “The other guys in my heat really push me to ride better and win events like today.”

The action continued today at the Orlando Watersports Complex, as the 17th annual ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra hosted finals for 13 of the 21 divisions competing throughout the four-day event. Among the 13 newly crowned world champions was 12-year-old Illinoisnative Taylor McCullough – the only rider to successfully defend their title.

McCullough, the 2009 Girls division world champion, captured her second consecutive world title today in the 13 & under category, after taking first place in her four-woman final.

“It’s a really cool feeling to be called the best in the world, and I’ve done it twice,” said McCullough. “I’ve been training three times a day for the last two weeks for this contest, so I’m really happy to see that hard work pay off.”

Today’s win caps off an incredible season for McCullough, as earlier this year she took home her third straight U.S national title, signed with several leading industry sponsors and was featured in the August issue of Sports Illustrated.

“It’s been an awesome year for me,” said McCullough. “I’m going to keep training to get ready for next year; I want to ride on the Pro Tour.”

In addition to McCullough, 13-year-old Australian young gun Tony Iacconi also made waves on the water today, after he took first place in the Jr. Men’s division. Iacconi decided not to defend his title in the Boys division this year, so he could gain the experience of competing in the more advanced 18 & under category.

“I didn’t expect to win Worlds, I just wanted to be competitive,” said Iacconi. “I’m super stoked to go back home to Australia as a world champion.”

The ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra will continue tomorrow, Aug. 21 with six divisions hitting the water, including the Pro Men and Women’s divisions. The ticketed event runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate on event dates for $10 (general admission), $5 (ages 6-12) or free (ages 5 and under).

In addition to all the action on the water; on land, spectators will enjoy great food and music; athlete autograph signings; chances to win freebies; and shopping at the most cutting-edge stores for water-sports equipment including boats, wakeboards, wakeskates, sunglasses and the latest in wakeboarding and surfing fashions.

Spectators can also pick up their share of $10,000 in free gift cards from Overton’s, the official water-sports retailer of the King of Wake series. Fans can also register to win a $500 Overton’s catalog shopping spree.

The WWA Wakeboard World Championships is the solely owned property of the World Wakeboard Association (WWA). With 27 Affiliate countries world wide the WWA is the global leader in the sport of wake. The WWA is a rider formed organization dedicated to promoting and growing wake sports worldwide. It is the leading source for riders, event organizers, and competitive standards.

Since getting back to Orlando from Knoxville our house has been flat out with Amber’s boat running over time with juniors, amateurs, veterans and pro riders coming to ride behind the Supra. Then of course the ladies of the house getting our sets in, focusing on new tricks and linking together our contests passes!

Bec has been riding really strong and is looking confident on her board adding a roll to blind to her bag of tricks, which includes a tootsie roll, ts and hs 540, ts and hs backside 180′s. If Bec keeps everything together she will defiantly be a solid contestant in pro women!

After the latest Pro Tour win Amber is determined to throw down even harder this weekend, with the possibility of having Whirly, Moby dick, Pete Rose, hs 540 and and ts 720 in her pass! ridiculous! When Amber is ON this is what she can confidently bang out free riding!

I have hopes of getting down the new tricks I have learnt this year, with a mix of glides, front side and back side spins, front flip and a toes side back side 360 which is the newest trick in my bag.

We all have some work cut out for us to keep progressing throughout the heats with Nicola, Raimi, Emily, Melissa and Anna all doing their own thing and making it hard for the rest of the field. The woman’s division is looking really healthy with a lot of competition as this is the last contest of the year every single one of us is going to focused with their mind set on having a good final performance and push for a podium position.

Watch out ladies, the Aussies girls are here!!! hehehe

The first two days of the ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra features the amateur divisions and is free to the public. Saturday and Sunday will be a ticketed event and will host the pro divisions.

Congratulations to Aussie Amber Wing, who claimed her first title of the 2010 season at the Knoxville, TN Pro Tour Stop.

The Pro Women’s division saw a huge upset today during its final round of action. Top seed Nicola Butler had three uncharacteristic falls in her run, opening the door for the five other female finalists to win in Knoxville.

“I didn’t get to do everything I wanted to in my run, but overall I thought I rode pretty well,” said Wing. “This is my first win on Tour this year, so tonight I need to go out and celebrate.”

Emily Copeland Durham and Raimi Merritt rounded out the contest podium, respectively.

Wing’s win in Knoxville places her second overall in the Queen of Wake standings – an all female pro wakeboarding series. Despite a poor showing in Knoxville, Nicola Butler still leads the series, with Raimi Merritt taking third overall. The Queen of Wake will wrap up its 2010 season in Orlando, Fla. next week.

Best of luck to all of the ladies this weekend at the WWA World Championships, which will take place at the Orlando Watersports Complex.

Sparks, Nev. – Emily Copeland Durham is one the most highly decorated pro female wakeboarders in the world, but in 2009, the Denver native decided to put her career on hold to start a family and give birth to her first born child. Now nearly a year and half since her last professional contest, Copeland Durham returned to the pro wakeboard scene today by hitting the waters of Sparks Marina for the Pro Women’s division quarterfinals at the Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by ROCKSTAR.

“I’m just excited to be back out on the water, doing what I love,” said Copeland Durham. “The other girls have stepped up their riding so much since I last competed, but I’ve been training and my goal is to finish within the top three in the contest.”

Copeland Durham’s first shot at a triumphant return came today, as she finished second in her heat, advancing onto tomorrow’s semifinals.

“I was a little nervous about riding, but felt I had a good run today,” said Copeland Durham. “Now that I got my first run out of the way, I’m feeling a little more confident going in to tomorrow.”

Should Copeland Durham advance in the semifinals and win her division on Sunday, it will mark her second national title since 2001. Coincidently, Sparks Marina was the site of her last professional win, back in 2008.

You could call him the Masseur to the Stars. His healing hands have worked on the sore muscles of Wakeboarding’s elite athletes. However, Justin Candelora, of Own2Hands, is not one to knead and tell. In fact, he was very coy when I asked him to name names. Suffice to say that, if it’s good enough for Amber Wing (and Dallas Friday, and Hayley Smith, and almost all of the Pro Women), it is good enough for me.

Justin got his calling at the age of five. There was a massage therapist that lived across the street from him, and he used to go over and massage the knots out of her neck. The first time Justin did this, his neighbor came over afterwards and told Justin’s mom “Make SURE he becomes a massage therapist.” You can say that he has the magic touch.

As an athlete himself, Justin saw a need for sports massage. He claims that “we all break down the same way, athletes just do it a lot faster and with a lot more trauma.” He is trying to integrate the benefits of therapeutic massage into the world of sports. The goal of regular sports massage is to make the body move with less effort, remove adhesions and increase the range of motion.

A lot of sports injuries may be prevented with the proper sports massage techniques. Justin mentions that a lot of the pro women understand the importance of taking care of their bodies, and he’s trying to get through to the pro men the fact that stretching and massage has to become part of their regimen in order to prevent certain types of injuries.

Even non-athletes can benefit from sports massage. As Justin says, “Life’s a sport. Don’t play hurt.” As a desk jockey, I can attest that his healing hands work wonders on us common folk! To book an appointment, call Justin at 407-616-4756 or visit his website. You will be glad you did.

Spring is here and for girls everywhere, that means swimsuit season is upon us. But if you’re a WakeGirl, it means it’s time to prepare for more than just looking good on the boat… you want to look and feel good behind the boat. Pre-season training is so vital for reaching your wakeboarding goals, and perhaps more importantly, to avoid injuries that can seriously slow down or even end your riding time this summer.

There are a number of things you can do to get yourself wakeboard-ready. But if you are lucky enough to live in Northern California, you could join the group of girls who are taking part in the Wakeboard Fitness/Trampoline Training Bootcamp put on by Isaac Gredinburg of Fitness Synergetics and CWB Faction Team Rider Jason Callen. Every Saturday in the month of April, San Jose area board shop The Liquid Playground will host this one of a kind training event. Here’s an inside look at what these WakeGirls have signed up for:

Each bootcamp begins with a series of stretches – from head to toe, stretching should begin every work out and every wakeboard set. Isaac then puts everyone through several sets of wakeboard-specific exercises. All major muscle groups are worked in ways that mimic many of the moves made on the water – like weighted handle passes and hopping squats.

There’s also very unique exercises that Isaac has developed to break up the monotony of the average workout – like the ropes and some hard core crunches.

Then each trainee gets their turn on the trampoline. Trampoline training is such a fantastic way to develop your air awareness and to perfect body and handle position before taking a move out on the water. For many, it’s also a great way to get past the fear of going upside down. Jason has everyone work on proper technique doing basic jumps, but also gives each person a customized lesson on whatever they may be wanting to learn.
Seeing so many women at this event is an indicator of just how serious ladies are about taking their riding to the next level. Jaime Hartford from the Bay area just started riding last season, but is definitely hooked. She’s sure being in shape prior to the start of the season will help her with controlling the board and giving her more confidence. “It will be fun to not have to think about anything but flying on the water.”

Riders like Lisa Hunt and Hillary Steinmetz, both from San Jose, say working out is a regular part of their lifestyles, and have already been working with their own personal trainers. No doubt both these ladies will be in top form when they start working on their goals – for Lisa that’s clearing the wake, for Hillary it’s landing a tantrum.

Michelle Gredinburg of San Jose is lucky to have her personal trainer right at home – she’s married to Isaac. Last year Michelle started the season with no preparation, and her stamina just wasn’t there. “It was frustrating because my mind wanted to do more than my body would do. My arms would get tired, my legs would get tired.” Besides this bootcamp, Michelle is training with Isaac 2 to 3 times a week to build up her endurance.

Lindsey Sloatman from Sacramento already does yoga for flexibility and free weights to strengthen her core, but is always looking for new things to spice up her workouts. For her, this bootcamp is also a great way to network, to meet others who are as passionate about wakeboarding as she is.

“We were really surprised at how well it took off,” said Isaac, who has already booked another two Bootcamps for May and June that will also include a behind the boat lesson. “It started out as a way to get people ready for the season… it’s a great combo to have Jason’s coaching and my fitness training. Then I saw that people were exchanging numbers so they could go ride together, and we’ve got two girls we never knew before coming out on the boat with us this weekend. I’ve had shops and riders in Southern California asking us to come down and put on a Bootcamp for them. Bringing people together is the best part of this for me.”

After a long and hot four days, Wake Games finally came to a close on Sunday, May 2. We were blown away by the organization of the event (big ups to Priscilla Scollin and the entire World Sports and Marketing team for a job WELL done), but also by the quality of the riding at all levels. The pool of Professional Women riders was 16 deep this year, with a six-rider final that included rookie Anna Hajek throwing it down as if she’s been riding with the Pro Women for years. The tricks we saw included Amber Wing’s whirlybird (which gets better every year) and Raimi Merritt’s s-bend, as well as a new tantrum to blind from Dallas Friday that got her the top spot on the podium. Both Amber and Raimi attempted toe 720′s on their bonus trick at the end of their runs. These girls are bringing it, and we can’t wait to see what they do this summer. We have a feeling it’s going to be out of sight! Check out the Pro Women Final video, and the final Wake Games results below.

Hi Guys, Laura is typing this as I give her this update over the phone. It’s sunny today, and even though it’s usually pretty windy here, the course is very nice with flat water, and favorable conditions. Bob Soven is riding as I give you this update! The First Heat had Anna Hajek, Shawna Hoffman, Reimi Merritt and myself, and the Second Heat had Barrett Perlman, Tarah Benzel-Mikacich, and Nicola Butler. The top two women in each heat will make it through to the Finals, which are tomorrow at 3pm. The results have yet to be posted but I will call you as soon as we find out.

This workout targets your arms. Welcome to the gun show!

1. You will need a BOSU ball, which is one half of a stability ball. Your gym should have a few. Find your sweet spot on the BOSU. Do a standard bicep curl: hold dumbbells with arms straight down, hands facing forward, and curl your arms. Repeat. If you don’t have access to a BOSU, you can do standard bicep curls instead.

2. Using a machine, chair, or bench, do tricep dips.

3. Now do 20 lunges. Lunge forward holding a medicine ball and add a twist in the direction of your front leg. For example, when you lunge with your right leg, twist your upper body to the right.

4. Stand on the BOSU again. If you don’t have one, don’t worry! Do a standard bicep curl. Once you curl your arms, push straight up and turn your hands so that your palms face away from you.

5. Do 1 minute of mountain climbers. Get in a standard push-up position and alternate bringing your right leg in so your foot is even with your left knee. Switch legs without stopping in between.
