Today is National Girls & Women in Sports Day. The purpose of today is to celebrate the millions of girls and women who participate in sports an athletics. Here at WG, we are proud of all our athletes, whether they are pro, amateur, or just for fun! Our awesome peeps at Women Talk Sports have created a great slideshow with pictures from all over showcasing women and girls having a blast with sports. You may recognize some of the athletes in the slideshow if you are a wake sports fan. If you have a chance today, get out there and play!

Best of ’09 – A Year for Women in Wake

Posted by WG Laura
December 28th, 2009

I can’t believe that another year has gone by. It seems that a few weeks ago it was April, and we had just launched this site. I think it was fate that brought us to launch in 2009, which has turned out to be the best year for women’s wakeboarding and wakeskating so far. Like any other sport, women’s wake sports go through cycles: one year, women are the talk of the town and everyone is pumped about them, and the next year, women are fighting tooth and nail to get recognition. I really feel that this time it is different. Women have accomplished so much and are pushing the sport so hard, I see us riding this wave of firsts for many years to come. Some of our favorite highlights from 2009 include:

It seems crazy that all of these things have happened in just one year (actually, most of these took place over the Summer!). I am grateful for the fact that WakeGirls has been here to document and track most of these milestones, and we are looking forward to what the girls will bring in 2010. We are already planning clinics and WakeGirls sessions, as well as our online video competition, Wake Idol. Thanks for being here with us every step of the way!!!

Women Talk Sports Network

You may have recently noticed a badge on the right hand side of the blog. WakeGirls is now part of the Women Talk Sports Network, which “…brings together the world’s best websites focusing on topics relating to women in sport. The network connects sites from across the globe that provide high-quality news, opinion, advice, blogs, data and tools.” We are very excited to be a part of WTS, and we hope that you visit their site and check out some of the other blogs on the network, which cover such diverse topics as snowboarding, basketball, running, and more.
Now that the offseason is upon us, I’ve started thinking about our yearly trip to Colorado in the winter, and how I am going to make the most of the 6 days we will be there. WTS read my mind and posted this article from member blog Westbound Boarder on how to get in shape for the snowboard season. Because most wakeboarders are snowboarders too, I thought I would share it with you guys. Let me know what you think.
